A trip to the world’s most beautiful island deserves a grand experience. When we traveled to Coron, Palawan, we stayed at The Funny Lion and I have to say, it’s a superb hotel. If you’re looking for a quiet place surrounded with mangroves and an overlooking view of the island, then this place is definitely for you. Here’s my full review of The Funny Lion, Coron, Palawan.
WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
Upon arriving at the airport, we were greeted by the staff which took us directly to the hotel. It was raining the entire day. I already had a bad feeling that it will last for the next couple of days and I was right. Good thing was that we have a fancy hotel for our staycation.
The Funny Lion is very accessible from the town. It’s just one ride away via tricycle. Inside, it’s like a jungle with various animal statues. From the lion at the reception to the giraffe at the corridor, you’ll find yourself amused while walking to your room.
Before checking in to our room, we had a quick snack at their restaurant and I must admit that their food is really awesome. I super love it. So much love for their beefy fries and pizza.
A QUIET ROOM
The rooms at The Funny Lion is far from the fancy type. It’s very simple but cozy, a mix of wood and white-washed wall giving off that contemporary cabin feel. The lavatory and wash area is separated from the toilet and bath which is quite unusual. Although there’s a bar for hanging your clothes above the lavatory, the room lacks a wardrobe cabinet. Instead, a small cabinet desk is placed on the side where you can place your stuff.
Our room is located on the third floor and it offers a view of the sea which would have been perfect for sunrise or sunset if it had not only rained the entire time. However, I find the solar panel from the adjacent building an eyesore. Nevertheless, it was still a great view.
I also have to mention that their lemongrass body wash which smells sooo good. Lemongrass is all over the hotel and in fact, they also have a mosquito repellent at the restaurant which is *you guessed it right* lemongrass scented.
A PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE
One thing to love about The Funny Lion is how they personalize each experience. The keys are given via a dog tag which is pretty cool and they give you this small bag tag with your name on it which is very sweet. Also, their complimentary brownies and dates are pure heaven. Although there are moments where the power would go on and off due to outages (power interruptions are very common in Coron), The Funny Lion has generators to back it up. But yeah, with the air-conditioning unit going on and off every now and then, it can be quite annoying. Also, signal is very weak in the area but luckily, they have Wi-Fi.
The pool area is located on the far most side of the hotel, just beside the restaurant. It’s an infinity pool surrounded by mangroves which gives off that tropical vibe. There’s also a jacuzzi and a massage pool area.
A GASTRONOMIC TREAT
When it comes to finding a hotel, one major consideration is the food that they are serving especially if you’re planning on a staycation. No matter how nice the room and service is, if the food sucks it’ll definitely be a huge turn off. That’s exactly where The Funny Lion stands out. Their food is so good. The seafood is fresh and it tastes great and even their breakfast alone is enough to satisfy you throughout the day. I personally love their *insert dried fish*, Coron’s local version of the daing (dried fish). Also, you must try their Tagbanua coffee. It’s super strong and yet has this delicate flavor to it. It’s prepared by the Tagbanua tribe which inhabits the islands of Coron.
THE PRICE
The price range for The Funny Lion is fair enough if you want an exclusive experience without breaking the bank. Price packages per room with services such as spa massage and breakfast cost from Php 10,000-15,000 and that’s good for a family already. For off peak seasons, it can go as low as Php 4,000 (as of checking).
WHAT I LOVE
WHAT I DON’T LOVE
FINAL VERDICT
While The Funny Lion is packed with a great view from the deck, the location of their solar panels are very distracting. Also, others may find the location of the lavatory inconvenient since you need to get out of the bathroom to brush your teeth. The lack of storage cabinet can also be a problem although their desk is sufficient for travelers like me. Since it rained the entire duration of our stay, I’ve already expected heavy winds. But what I wasn’t expecting that it would be that strong. Imagine this: I was in the room taking a rest when all of a sudden, someone knocked heavily on the door and window. Of course I opened it without realizing it was just the wind. That’s how strong it was.
Still, my experience at The Funny Lion was a good one despite some flaws on the room. This would be perfect for couples and family who want some escape from the busy life at the city. They have packaged tours as well making sure your trip to Coron would be hassle free.
The Funny Lion is located at Sitio Jolo, Poblacion 5, Coron, Palawan. For booking and inquiries, you may check it here. You can also check their Facebook and Instagram.
